Chapter Six
Kimmy took Monday off to drive into Greeley.
She needed dresses, a pedicure, and a stylish haircut if she was going to spend the week pretending to be Bookerâs girlfriend on the wealthy side of town.
What I need is my head examined.
This was the one time she shouldâve broken a promise. Her hesitation wasnât just because she was still in the process of forgiving Booker. Growing up, sheâd never felt as if she fit with the kids who wore expensive tennis shoes and name-brand blue jeans. For heavenâs sake, sheâd cleaned Haywoodâs house yesterday for the party she was attending tonight. If that wasnât proof she was out of her element, she didnât know what was.
At the mall in Greeley, Kimmy ventured deep into foreign territoryâa department store dress department.
âMay I help you?â The woman who stepped between the racks had a style Kimmy envied. She wore a figure-flattering dress and a pair of attractive heels that didnât look tortuous.
âIâll have one of those.â Kimmyâs gesture encompassed the woman. âI need three dresses to wear to wedding events and one to a wedding. Plus shoes. Andâ¦â She sighed. Might as well just admit all her failings. âThis is what I normally wear to work.â She gestured to her blue jeans and red T-shirt. âYour mission, should you choose to accept it, is to make me look like I know what Iâm doing in the dress department.â
The sales clerkâLydia, her name tag saidâtook Kimmy by the arm. âIâve been dreaming of you my entire life. Come on.â
An hour later, Kimmy was armed with four dresses sheâd never wear after this week, a pair of heels she could stand to wear for a few hours, and a referral to the spa in the mall.
At the spa, the hairstylist wasnât as excited to see Kimmy as Lydia had been. âWhat kind of product do you use on your hair?â
âShampoo.â By the womanâs frown, she could tell that was the wrong answer. âI have to wear my hair back for work every day. I donât need product.â
The hairstylist tried to run her fingers through Kimmyâs frizzy hair but her hands moved slowly through the thick mass. âYou need product. Good product.â
Kimmy took that to mean expensive. She couldnât afford expensive. That was why she didnât go to Prestige Salon in Sunshine. With all her credit card spending today, she was setting her food truck timeline back a week.
The hairstylist ran a comb carefully through Kimmyâs hair. âAnd you need bangs.â
âI donât want bangs.â
âYou need bangs.â
âNo bangs.â
âIâll change your mind.â
âNo, you wonât,â Kimmy said as politely as she could.
âYouâre tense.â The woman continued combing Kimmyâs hair.
âIâm tense because you keep talking about bangs.â
âYou need a complete spa treatment. Massage. Facial. Wax. Mani-pedi. Hair. Afterward, youâll feel like a new woman.â Her recommendations sounded convincing. Her hair, skin, and nails were flawless. Not to mention she styled hair while wearing high heels. She looked like she belonged at Hayâs party more than Kimmy ever would.
âOkay, fine.â Her credit card balance was going to be huge.
